Yossi sat at a distance as Mordecai spoke with the man. It was early evening, the sun had dropped behind the hills to the west and the day’s light was slowly fading. He shivered and watched as a flock of hundreds of small black birds spiralled above the camp, then disappeared into the trees, tweeting and jabbering, invisible among the leaves.

Yossi thought about the idea of going to the religious service but immediately felt his body cramping, panicking. No, he wouldn’t. He couldn’t. Where were the swallows? he thought, trying to distract himself. They should be out now, catching flies above the lake and fields.

But there were none.

They had gone.

Before long Yossi saw that the men and the boys they had been speaking to were on the move, walking over to the main hall of the Calgarth Estate.

Mordecai walked up to him and put his hand out. Yossi took it and allowed his friend to pull him up from the grass.

“We’re going in. For the service.” Mordecai smiled. He looked happy, excited.

Yossi released Mordecai’s hand.

“Come on,” Mordecai said. “You said you’d come.”

Yossi shook his head. “I can’t,” he said.

“What?” Mordecai looked confused. “Why?”

“I just can’t,” Yossi told him.

The two boys parted. Mordecai walking, almost running, to the room where the service would be held. Yossi walking to sit under a tree and stare at the ground beneath his feet. He would not go to the service. He could not go to the service. And he never would again.
